Asking for a Bit of Help Asking for help is one way to deepen or build a connection with family, friends, and or community. I find it very difficult to ask for help. Pride can get in the way of allowing those who want to help, to help. My parents are very much a “do for yourself” couple. Interestingly they are more than happy to help someone else out if asked. Sometimes even if not asked. So why is it so hard for them to seek help when they need it? Evaluating When Help is Needed Sometimes it is hard to tell when you need help, instead of a simpler solution. I like to know I am in a tight corner, with no way out, before I entertain the idea of outside help. My circle of connections is so small that I feel I need to be respectful of resources and time. I’ve been needing to get my brakes done and a little while back I told my brother. I was not looking forward to paying the crazy amount the shop wanted for the job. He let me know that he had changed the brakes on both his wife’s car, and that of his son. Then he offered to help us out. It took a few months to coordinate, but we managed to sync up this week. All it took was the cost of parts, my brother, Thomas’ and a couple of neighbour’s time. My brakes were changed. Thomas and my brother got to connect over a project, while I got to hang out with my sister-in-law. Strangers Asking strangers is another situation all together. I find that the younger generations do not seem to have this hang-up. They just ask. In some ways, assume that you will be happy to help. This unsettles me. Asking strangers tapps in to my teenagehood. Self-sufficiency was the goal, until mom and/or dad got home from work. We did it, or it didn’t happen. It will always take me a while to ask for help from a stranger. How does asking for help build connections for you? Closing out this week of training. Hope you are ready for the weekend. One Thing At A Time
One is Powerful Number One idea too many. This morning I was struck by an amazing idea. Along with that one idea came pages and pages of notes. I did a mind dump of anything and everything that came to mind regarding this crazy amazing idea. Then I walked away and did a practical task. This is not the first idea I have had about a product or business. What my pattern has been is to think it all through, like I am living it, but never find the one thing I can do to start. All that does is leave me overwhelmed and stressed out. As the days go by and nothing happens because I ended up in the tar pit of my mind, I get sad and guilty. Feelings of not being good enough take place of the initial overwhelm and become my new focus. I know that tune all too well. One Action That is It This time I sat down with Thomas told him my idea’s and then he helped me to figure out what my barriers to making it happen were. From that I created one positive thing to make it real today. I already know what I will focus on tomorrow, and then I will plan my one thing for the next day. This maybe a slow way of getting something done, but it is better than my last approach. The approach of nothing but crickets. No feedback, no growth, no mistakes leading to solutions. A lot of nothing. I knew that I could manage one action towards creating this new idea each day. This new mindset has so far prevented the “you’re not good enough” demons from descending. Have you ever had a great idea that died on the vine? Did you successfully take an idea to reality, if so what was the best part about it? Something to muse over while you are training your fit self. Light Up Your Life To Sleep Better
Light and Sleep Light in the morning has changed my day. Thomas and I had a chat last week about my habit of getting up in the morning and hanging out in the dark while making breakfast. Not having the lights on feels more soothing to me. I do realize that it also prolongs my wakeup routine. For a couple of days I have flipped the switch and added light to my morning routine. It has helped me to wake up better. Which seems to bring more alertness. Granted it has only been a couple of days but it is worth keeping up the experiment. Turning down the lights at night helps me get drowsy. I have known this for a long time and usually have just enough lights on to not walk into something. I do not know why I did not do the opposite for waking up. Alarm vs. Light One experiment that Thomas and I did when we had a house was to put in a system that would wake us up by light instead of sound. There was a little buzz as the lights came on from the electricity. It was much more of a pleasant and subtle wake up than an alarm or TV turning on. The sudden shock to the system that I experienced, since a child when waking up for school, was gone. It really was better for my mood and outlook for the day. Now you can buy a light alarm instead of a sound alarm. If you are one of those people that can get up turn the alarm off and go back to bed without remembering it, maybe lighting up your morning could work instead. Do you have a way of waking in the morning that leaves you feeling refreshed or startled? If you were to try and make you morning more pleasant, what would you change? Hope you feel refreshed and ready to train. Cheers!! … This content is only available to active members who have logged in. Required membership(s): Online Personal Training...
Chill Out, Put Your Feet Up, and Sip Tea
Chill Out Drinking Tea Chill out by brewing yourself a cup of tea. You can make a ritual out of it and make it even more chill. Or, take a more practical approach; Glass measuring cup with water in microwave to boil. Choose my taste and caffeine level preference, then brew. If I am having an anxious or stressful morning I stick with caffeine free, even if tea has half the caffeine found in coffee. Otherwise I like to start off with a green tea or Earl Gray (black tea). If I get overwhelmed, or need a break throughout the day, I brew a cup of tea. The heat from the cup is soothing in my hands. Feeling the warm liquid in my belly easies the gripping sensation in my stomach. Usually I take a moment to just chill. Stop the stress wheel for a minute. Finding Ways to Disconnect Even if it is for a short moment, finding a way to disconnect from what is creating anxiousness helps. I have tendency to soothe myself with food. Tea is a bit of a healthier alternative. The warmth gives a similar sensation of fullness that food provides. Sweet cold tea does not fill the same need for me. The sweetness can be stimulating and spin up emotions I am trying to take a break from. Discovery through the years has brought me to my current tea use. Lipton tea with three lumps of sugar was what I thought tea was about. While staying with my Aunt for a short time, I discovered new teas. She had a wide selection of herbal teas and used Stevia to sweeten. Herbal teas left me feeling less hamster wheel and more leisurely stroll. If you are looking for a way to take a break, or add a little chill to your day, consider experimenting with tea. If you are used to drinking caffeinated sugary drinks and you switch to tea for a day, write down what you notice that is different. Did it match your expectations? Heads up, you are starting a new phase in training today. Cheers!!… This content is only available to active members who have logged in. Required membership(s): Online Personal Training...
